Ramelton is a Bord Failte designated Heritage Town and a perfect place for a short break. It hasa warm atmosphere, friendly people, lovely pubs and a wealth of accommodation. Today Ramelton has a population of approx. 1900 people. It is a busy town with all necessary facilities. There are 3 churches in use, 2 schools, 6 pubs, 2 petrol stations, a nursing home, one bank, 2 ATM machines, Bus hire service, two tennis courts, football pitch and various shops.

The old warehouses

The warehouses are amongst the most fascinating buildings in Donegal and formed the backdrop for the highly acclaimed television series "The Hanging Gale". This was made in 1995 and tells about the Famine in Ireland in 1845.

There is also a Ramelton story exhibition in the newly refurbished Steamboat Store where it presents the story of Ramelton from its earliest settlement to the present day. It is open from 9:30 to 5:00, Mondays to Fridays and also opens weekends in June, July and August

The Genealogical Research Centre for County Donegal is also located in this centre.

River Lennon

The River Lennon has a long tradition of being a valuable fishing river. This has brought many tourists to the area. Over the years, the river has produced some prizes fishing trophies. In the past, Ramelton fish stocks in the River Lennon have fallen to lower levels, but here was caught the first salmon in 2003.

It began with a small dedicated group of people in 1970. For the past 30 years, the Lennon Festival has continued to surpass itself again and again. The tradition take place every July with a variety of events, including the "Queen of the Lennon", Live Music, Singing Pubs, the Carnival Parade etc.

 


Town Hall

The Town Hall was built in 1878 with money donated by the inhabitants. The restoration began in 2003, again donated by the Locals.

The local pantomime group, founded in 1956, uses the Town Hall for their spectacularly performances.

Every Friday women of Ramelton offer fruits, vegetables, self-made marmalades and others at the Country market.


Town Park

 

 

Since 2002, Ramelton has its own beautiful Town Park. A nice place to relax and to enjoy the view over the mouth of the River Lennon into the Lough Swilly.


Swilly Rovers

The soccer team of Ramelton are called "Swilly Rovers". The team has a great tradition and was founded in 1929. Their home ground is Swilly Park not too far from the town centre.

Swilly Rovers also offer you the opportunity to play footbal all year round on the new floodlight Astro Turf pitch which was installed in 2004.

Town Band

Locals in the town set up a town band in 1990 which has be going from strength to strength ever since, winning many Ulster and All Ireland competitions.

The town band teaches music to the youth in the community. The instruments range from the tin-whistle to percussion instruments. The band meets up once a week and travels to many competitions during the summer months.
